My Dune Awakening Master Tier List After 200 Hours on Arrakis
Dune Awakening best starting class guide ranks every mastery: Swordmaster dominates early, Bene Gesserit adapts, Mentat supports squads.
I have died in the deep desert more times than I care to admit. In 2026, Arrakis is still the kind of place where a bad early build can send you back to the carryall before you even learn how to keep water in your stillsuit. When I first opened Dune Awakening, the character creator asked me to choose a master. I thought it was just flavor. It was not. That choice defines your starting skills, your first fights, and your first long trek across the sand.
After playing every mastery and hunting down the trainers, here is what I learned.
🥇 Swordmaster — the class I underestimated
I started with Trooper, actually. Big mistake. The Swordmaster is the class I would now recommend to anyone stepping onto Arrakis for the first time. Its Knee Charge deletes early scavengers in one hit. One hit. I remember watching a melee raider rush me near Pinnacle Station; I tapped Knee Charge and he folded. The Deflection skill is the other half of the story. If a ranged enemy tries to plink me while I am closing distance, I pop Deflection and walk straight into their face. No gun needed to clear a small camp. That combination makes the Swordmaster the strongest early game choice.
🥈 Bene Gesserit — the flexible second choice
The Bene Gesserit mastery is not as simple as the Swordmaster. It leans on the Weirding Way, the Voice, and body control. I found it much harder to master, and the cooldown on Compel can feel slow when a sandstorm is on the way. But if you want an all-rounder, this is it. The healing and combat skills let me float between support and offense. I would not recommend it as your very first class unless you enjoy a learning curve. It shines later, after you understand enemy patterns.
🥉 Mentat — the friend I was glad to have
When I played with my squad, the Mentat was a quiet hero. Its kit is less about direct combat and more about poison damage and shields. That support can keep a party alive in bad fights. Alone, though, it feels thin. The Mentat cannot brawl the way a Swordmaster can, and I often felt like I was waiting for a friend to finish the kill. Still, if you roll with a group, this is a great starting class.

4️⃣ Trooper — not the power fantasy I expected
You would think a dedicated soldier would have the best starting combat skills. I did too. The Shigawire Claw disappointed me. It is mostly a traversal tool, and in a fight it is slow, short-ranged, and hard to control. It can stagger enemies, but the Swordmaster's Knee Charge and the Bene Gesserit toolkit both feel better. The saving grace is the Gunnery skill line, which improves ranged weapons later. I still learned it, but I would not start as a Trooper again.
🔒 Planetologist — the surprise fifth class
The Planetologist cannot be chosen at character creation. I had to find them on Arrakis. That alone told me something. Their starting skill, the Suspensor Pad, directly competes with the Trooper's Claw for traversal and actually wins. Their mechanic skills make vehicles and fuel last longer, and their scientific knowledge helps with mining and resource gathering. There are almost no combat skills, which is likely why they are not a starting class, but I recommend learning this mastery as soon as it becomes available. It changed how I explored.
Where I found every master
Every class has a basic and an advanced trainer. The Planetologist is the only exception. Here is the list I keep in my datapad:
| Mastery | Basic Trainer | Location | Advanced Trainer | Location |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Swordmaster | Arno | Pinnacle Station, Jabal-Eifrit Al-gharb | Seron Varlin | Harko Village |
| Bene Gesserit | Sister Mesa | Helius Gate, Eastern Shield Wall | Jacosta Cleo | Harko Village |
| Mentat | Samin Moro | Riftwatch, Hagga Rift | Zayn de Witte | Salusan Bull, Arrakeen |
| Trooper | Ghavouri | Griffin's Trading Outpost, Hagga Basin South | Kara Valk | Atreides stronghold, Arrakeen |
| Planetologist | Derek Chinara | Above Imperial Testing Station #2, Hagga Basin South | None | None |
The basic trainers are not too hard to reach, but I did need some progress before I could complete their quests. Harko Village and Arrakeen only became relevant after I had survived long enough to matter.
What I would tell a new player in 2026
Start with the Swordmaster if you want the cleanest early game. Pick Bene Gesserit later once you understand positioning. Bring a Mentat if you have friends. Learn Trooper for Gunnery, but do not expect the Claw to carry you. And chase down the Planetologist early, because better vehicles and resource gathering solve a lot of survival problems before they start. You will still need water, especially on long missions. That means getting a Blood Purifier soon. But that is another lesson from the deep desert. Choose your first master carefully. Arrakis does not forgive easily.
