Dune Awakening Patch 1.1.0.17 Turns Deep Desert South Into PvE Haven
Dune Awakening patch 1.1.0.17 splits the Deep Desert into a southern PvE safe zone and northern high-reward PvP zone, easing endgame PvP complaints.
The great desert of Arrakis has a new rule: not every sand dune needs to be a potential murder scene. With Dune Awakening patch 1.1.0.17, Funcom has carved the Deep Desert into two very different experiences, granting PvE-focused survivors a massive safe zone while leaving the north as a high-stakes playground for the spice-hungry. This move addresses one of the loudest endgame complaints since the MMO opened its doors to a wave of players.

A Desert Divided
The entire southern half of the Deep Desert map now functions as a PvE zone. Points of interest like Imperial Testing Stations and caves are safe from player ambushes. However, Funcom made control points and shipwrecks in that region still PvP-enabled, just like their Hagga Basin counterparts.
This design keeps the old risk-versus-reward philosophy alive. The farther north a player travels, the denser the resources become. The largest spice fields and most control points sit in the northern PvP sections, so the brave still get better rewards for tolerating airborne rocket spam and close-range knife fights.
| Aspect | Southern PvE Zone | Northern PvP Zone |
|---|---|---|
| Resources | Balanced for PvE activities | Higher density, largest spice fields, most control points |
| Loot drops | Personal loot, one schematic per player | 2–6 schematics, first come, first served |
| Rare materials | Smaller supply | Better source of Titanium, Stravidium, and Plasteel plates |
| General vibe | Relaxed spice stroll | Sweaty sandstorm showdown |
The loot rules have been tuned accordingly. In the southern PvE zone, every player gets their own drops with an expectation of one schematic for everyone. That means no more losing a blueprint to a rival who simply clicked faster. In the PvP zone, however, between two and six schematics spawn on a first come, first served basis, and those schematics are more likely to be the rarest variants. Players hunting large quantities of Titanium, Stravidium, or Plasteel plates will still need to strap up and make an excursion into the dangerous north.
No More Forced PvP Baptism
Some Imperial Testing Stations remain in the PvP half of the map. For completionists who want every available schematic in a given week, traveling across the full region is still required. Fortunately, loot rotates between the stations weekly. Players who adamantly refuse to engage in PvP can simply wait for the missing schematics to appear in safer territory, or pick them up through trading and the Exchange. That is a generous compromise for anyone who would rather build a base than fight over a blueprint.
This specific change follows a recent developer update from Funcom creative director Joel Bylos, who addressed the community’s PvP frustrations directly. Dune Awakening has attracted a broad range of players since its breakout in 2025, and plenty of them are not interested in fighting other people. The update finally respects that split.
Ornithopters Get Grounded
The patch also makes early changes to Ornithopters. Equipping a rocket launcher module now decreases the top speed of Scout Ornithopters by 20% and Assault Ornithopters by 10%. That is a straightforward trade: extra firepower means less zoom.
More importantly, Ornithopters now drop straight down if a pilot exits them in mid-air or disconnects from the Dune Awakening servers. No more watching a precious vehicle glide away like a confused metal bird, never to be seen again. The fix may not be elegant, but it is effective.
Small Tools, Big Relief
Dune Awakening update 1.1.0.17 is live now, and the full patch notes from Funcom include a collection of additional bug fixes and quality-of-life tweaks. Players can now report others through text chat messages or by inspecting them in game, which should help moderators deal with the more obnoxious residents of Arrakis.
With the Deep Desert split, the endgame no longer feels like a mandatory PvP baptism. Builders, traders, and solo explorers can enjoy the southern sands in relative peace, while thrill-seekers can chase rare schematics and massive spice fields up north. After gathering the necessary materials, players can return to base building guides and mod setups to optimize their homes. Dune Awakening continues to justify its place among the best survival games and best MMOs, one patch at a time. 🏜️✨
